Stroll through the streets and stone arches
Take a stroll through the streets and stone arches of Muros old town, with over 800 years of history! 😲
Can you find the streets with the most pessimistic names? Such as Rúa da Amargura (Bitterness Street) or Rúa da Soidade (Solitude Street)... 😅
Enjoy its town squares 🏖️
The three coolest squares are Curro da Plaza (Town Hall Square), Plaza de la Pescadería Vella, and Plaza del Mercado.
The Curro da Plaza, where the Town Hall is located, is always full of life. Historically, it was closed off for bullfights. There are places to eat such as Casa Sampedro or for drinks like Teatro brewery. 🍻
📍 View on Google Maps
The Plaza de la Pescadería is the wine area! 🍷 Plus, it features a beautiful fountain with a stone lizard that you will love.
📍 View on Google Maps
And do not miss the Muros Market building, it is very beautiful.
📍 View on Google MapsThe promenade and harbor
Stroll around the Muros harbor, where you can see fishing boats, traditional gear, and the fresh catches of the day. 🐟
At the dock, near Restaurante Don Bodegón, you can spot some classic boats like the traditional dorna. ⛵
Visit the fish market (lonja) and check out the daily catch: octopus, shrimp, horse mackerel, hake... and even spider crabs! 🦀
If you are curious, do not miss the reverse auction starting around 4:00 PM. A traditional auction style where the price goes down until someone bids! 🤑
You might even spot dolphins during your walks! 🐬 In the Muros estuary, it is very common to see bottlenose dolphins, which in Galicia we call arroaz. They are very large and robust (measuring over 3 meters and weighing around 300 kg) due to our cold Atlantic waters. They often approach following schools of sardines or mackerel.
Additionally, in Muros we have a special affection for these animals due to the story of Manoliño (also known as Confi). He was a solitary dolphin who, between 2019 and 2025, became a true local legend by actively seeking interaction and joining divers, shellfish gatherers, and fishing boats in the estuary. An unforgettable sight if you are lucky enough to spot them near the harbor breakwater! 👀
Visit the Churches
Muros has some impressive churches that you are going to love. ⛪
San Pedro de Muros Church: This church is one of the oldest in the area, with origins dating back to the 10th century! 😲 Although the building today dates to the 16th century, the main facade with its pointed arch and bell tower is impressive. Inside, you will find Baroque altarpieces and a Romanesque baptismal font that will make you feel as if you traveled back in time. 🏰
📍 View on Google Maps
Virgen del Carmen Chapel: This Baroque chapel dates to the 18th century and is quite small. You can see the image of the Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of sailors! ⛵️
📍 View on Google Maps
Virgen del Camino Sanctuary: This church is not just a place of worship, it is a true symbol for seafarers! 🌊 Fishermen and sailors from Muros always commend themselves to the Virgen del Camino. It also houses a 14th-century crucified Christ of high historical value. ⚓ And if you walk to the beach out front, you might see shellfish gatherers at work.
📍 View on Google MapsVisit the Tide Mills of Pozo do Cachón 🌊
The Tide Mills are true treasures of hydraulic engineering. They harnessed the power of the Atlantic tides, retaining water in a large dam during high tide and then releasing it as the tide fell to turn the heavy millstones. It is like traveling back in time! ⏳
The Pozo do Cachón Tide Mill (in the parish of Serres) is one of the largest and most iconic in Spain. Built between 1815 and 1830 on a formidable 230-meter-long dam, it had a curious second life in the early 20th century as the Santa Rita Baths, a pioneering thalassotherapy spa where people came to receive warm baths of seawater and local seaweed to soothe aches and respiratory issues. Restored in the 90s, it now functions as a cultural center. Although the sea salt has worn it down a bit, it remains an essential stop! 🏰
📍 View on Google MapsThe best views of the town! ⚽
The best views of the town are from the football field. 👀
You can walk up or drive, as it is a bit high, but the views are absolutely worth it. Your choice! 🚗
📍 View on Google MapsRestaurantes
Note: some places may be closed out of season, so it is best to call and make sure they are open before heading over!
How about breakfast? ☕
Cafetería Mamaia 💸
The best coffee shop in Muros, without a doubt. They have everything: coffee, hot chocolate, churros, smoothies, toasts... Perfect to kickstart your day!
📍 View on Google MapsCafetería O'Café
If you want breakfast with pastries, empanadas, or desserts, they have a good selection. They offer a terrace under the arches.
📍 View on Google MapsWhat about lunch & dinner? 🍴
Here are some of my favorite places to enjoy local food. And do not forget to try the Tortilla Romana , a dessert unique to Muros!
Restaurante El Muelle 💸
A spot for tapas and typical Galician portions: squid, octopus, razor clams, scallops... It is budget-friendly and the potato omelet is delicious. In summer, getting a table on the terrace is a challenge, but worth it!
📍 View on Google MapsRestaurante Pizzería A Dársena 💸💸
Here you get a Galician touch, but also pizzas and burgers. If you want variety, this is your place. Also, they usually keep the kitchen open later than other restaurants, so if you are running late, this is the spot.
It is affordable and their octopus is usually quite good. And if you are craving Tortilla Romana, they have it! Though it is from a bakery, not homemade.
Although it might seem they are not specialized due to a large menu, this is actually a good place to eat fresh fish. 🐟
📍 View on Google MapsRestaurante Vila de Muros 💸💸
The venue features a special oven, and both the octopus and the charcoal-grilled vegetables are delicious... and the local squid is incredible! They serve T-bone steak, shellfish, and fish from the estuary.
If you go, do not miss the homemade Tortilla Romana, the Muros dessert that arrived by boat from Italy.
📍 View on Google MapsRestaurante A Muradana 💸💸💸
Located facing the sea on the promenade, it is a fantastic place if you want to enjoy high-quality fresh fish and seafood or their highly rated seafood rices. It features a lovely terrace with direct views of the estuary. Perfect for a special lunch or dinner in a calm, curated setting.
📍 View on Google MapsHamburguesería Mac Burguer 💸
The classic Mac de Pollo (Chicken Mac), the best burger in the world! To me, at least. They have fast food (burgers, pizzas, hot dogs) and platters. They offer takeout, but wait times can be a bit long in summer.
Right next to Mac Burguer is an alley with the steepest stairs in town! Do you dare climb them?
📍 View on Google MapsDon Bodegón 💸💸
This venue has maritime decor and stone walls. Specialized in meats like beef or pork ribs (churrasco), though they also have portions for sharing.
It is quite affordable and has a very pleasant atmosphere, separated from the main bar area where you can have a drink.
📍 View on Google MapsPulpería Pachanga 💸💸
Located in Plaza de la Pescadería, this place is small but has a large terrace. Perfect for typical Galician tapas and portions. In high season, if you are lucky, you might even find grilled sardines.
📍 View on Google MapsRestaurante Marbella 💸💸
A bit further from the center, but worth it for the breathtaking views of the town and estuary from the terrace. Great for an aperitif while enjoying the landscape.
📍 View on Google MapsMarisquería Fontevella 💸💸💸
Not in Muros, Restaurante Fontevella is in Caldebarcos (about 20 km away). It is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. With family service and quality products, it has spectacular views of Carnota beach.
Ideal for enjoying great fresh fish, octopus with clams, or meat. Food tastes better with a view! 👀
📍 View on Google MapsLocal Bakeries & Sweets 🥐
Muros preserves a fantastic artisan tradition in its local bakeries. Do not miss their star product:
Pan de Abelardo 🥖
It is a true institution in Muros. It is made entirely by hand and baked in traditional wood-fired ovens. It stands out for its thick, crunchy crust and dense, aerated crumb, ideal for accompanying local dishes or soaking up the oil of a good octopus á feira. It is the true taste of Galician bread!
How about drinks? 🍹
📍 View on Google MapsA Cova 💸
At Cervecería A Cova you can have drinks, both inside the cozy pub and on its terrace facing the sea promenade.
📍 View on Google MapsBars at the Town Hall Square like Teatro are another great option.
Beaches 🏖️
There are plenty of beaches around the estuary. In this selection, I compile the most convenient ones to visit, as well as the most representative and beautiful. But you might discover another one on your own that you find amazing!
Castillo Beach (0km) 🏝️
Playa del Castillo is not a breathtaking beach like the others nearby, but it is the beach right in town, which you can walk to without needing a car.
It is located next to the harbor and has showers. It is convenient and perfect for sunbathing 🌞 or a quick dip.
If you do not feel like driving, this is the place.
📍 View on Google MapsSan Francisco Beach (3.2km) 🌊
At the foot of Monte Louro lies this wide white-sand beach with a family-friendly atmosphere.
It features a pine grove 🌲🌲🌲, perfect if you like picnics 🧺, a playground with swings for children, and a wide variety of restaurants nearby.
It has showers for convenience, and although parking nearby can be tricky in peak season, you will find a spot with a bit of patience. 🚗
📍 View on Google MapsArea Maior Beach (7km) 🏄♂️
On the other side of Monte Louro is my favorite beach, Area Maior or Xalfas.
It is a wild beach, with a lagoon hosting native birds, white sand, and... waves. A perfect place if you want to surf or have fun in the waves 🌊. If you prefer a calm swim, I recommend going to San Francisco which is sheltered inside the estuary and has very small waves.
📍 View on Google MapsCarnota Beach (16km) 🌅
The Carnota beach is often named one of the best in Spain and the world 🏅. It is a wild beach over 11 km long.
I recommend walking barefoot, taking a stroll along the tide pools and rocks, and feeling the white sand under your feet.
The most beautiful part of the beach is the Boca do Río entrance. Use the link below to get there!
📍 View on Google MapsNorthbound Route
Here begins our northbound route, where we will explore the most breathtaking landscapes and iconic locations. 🌄
Louro 🌳
Louro is a beach town close to Muros. Here you will find San Francisco Beach 🏖️, an ideal place for families, with a cool pine forest 🌲 and plenty of restaurants for tapas.
You must visit O'Caldeiron, an old salted fish factory that has been renovated with impressive taste 👌. In Muros, we have another historical salted fish factory called Casa Anido. Both belonged to my ancestors, Catalans who ventured to set up canning factories on this Galician coast 🧳.
Normally, O'Caldeiron is closed out of season, but if you find it open, do not hesitate to walk in and see its spectacular inner courtyard! 🌿
I always try to get the "romantic table" 💕, the one right at the door with beach views. It is highly requested, but you might get lucky! 🍀
If you want tapas and portions, I recommend two good places: Café Bar San Francisco 🍻 and Restaurante Formoso 🍽️. Both are great and ideal for enjoying a sunny day with tasty food.
📍 View on Google MapsMonte Louro ⛰️
Get ready for an adventure! 🚶♂️ If you love hiking, you cannot miss climbing Monte Louro. From the top, the views are simply spectacular! 🌊🔭 You can enjoy the lighthouse 🏙️, listen to the roar of waves crashing against the rocks, and be amazed by the coastline panorama.🙌
Laguna del Monte Louro 🌊
If you want to take awesome photos 📸 of Monte Louro and its Lagoon, and see different birds 🦆, do not miss this spot. 🦅 Also, the lagoon has a bit of magic, as in ancient times local sailors believed the mountain was a sacred place protecting them from storms. 🌩️
Continuing along the AC-550, you will find a sign on the left indicating the path to the lagoon. It is not very visible. Also, to enter you need to make a U-turn a bit further ahead due to a solid line. Be careful with the bottom of your car when leaving the road and park where the arrow points. 🚗💨
If it is summer, you can pick blackberries 🍇 along the path to eat or make jam. Be careful not to get pricked by brambles. 🌿 The path is flat, but if it rains it can get muddy or overgrown. The spot in the photo is a two-minute walk away. I leave you the exact location so you do not miss it 😎
📍 View on Google MapsPlaya de Area Maior y Ancoradoiro 🏖️
A bit further ahead there is a left turnoff you can take to reach Area Maior Beach (my favorite!) or Ancoradoiro Beach (do not swim here, the waves are very dangerous!).
There is also a pine grove for picnics. 🌲
Faro de Lariño 🌅
The Faro de Lariño is one of my favorite spots to have a drink and enjoy incredible views of the wild beaches around. ⛵ Additionally, the lighthouse is located in a place full of history, as it was formerly used to guide fishermen navigating these dangerous waters, known for treacherous currents and rocks. ⚓
📍 View on Google Maps
Grabbing a drink here after the beach is awesome! You can also take the opportunity to do some hiking in the area. 🚶♂️
If you like playing padel 🏸, there is a court here. It is often empty, but to be sure, you can book it for free from the website below.
🎾 Book padel courtLira 🌊
Leaving Lariño behind, we reach Lira, a coastal town offering wild beaches, seaside gastronomy, and historical heritage. 🏖️ Additionally, it is said that in the past, during times of piracy, pirates took refuge on these shores 🏴☠️, leaving the area full of stories of battles and hidden treasures. ⚔️
In Lira we can contemplate one of the most impressive hórreos (granaries) in Galicia, 35 meters long, which competes with the Carnota Hórreo. Its church and dovecote also stand out. 🏰
My favourite restaurant in Lira is Bar Xouba. Decorated with maritime motifs, they offer seafood, affordable prices, and the ladies who run it are incredibly friendly! They also serve the typical local dessert, the tortilla romana — a delight! 🍽️
📍 View on Google MapsCarnota 🌊
📍 View on Google Maps
Carnota beach is stunning. And not just for sunny beach days. Rainy or overcast days have their own charm for a walk. It is a huge wild beach with tide pools, rocks, streams, and more. It is undoubtedly one of the best beaches in Galicia, rivalling the Playa de las Catedrales 🏖️ or the Playa de Rodas on the Cíes Islands 🏝️. You must not miss it! 🌊
You can enter the beach from many points, but the best access is through Boca do Río. I leave you the location below.
📍 View on Google MapsCaldebarcos: Restaurante Fontevella 💸💸💸 🍴
Past Carnota you reach Caldebarcos, where you will find Fontevella, one of my favourite restaurants in the area. 🦑
It is advisable to book in advance ⏰. If it is full, a similar alternative is the restaurant Casa Manolo, which offers a similar menu but without the incredible views.
📍 View on Google MapsÉzaro 💦
Ézaro is a magical place ✨ located on the Costa da Morte, surrounded by mountains, forests and beaches. It is an ideal spot for nature activities 🌳.
📍 View on Google Maps
📍 View on Google MapsÉzaro has a lovely beach 🏖️, with volleyball nets, beach bars for a mojito 🍹, and more. Also, if you want to see the waterfall from below, you might be able to rent a kayak 🚣♂️.
What next from here? You have two options: 🚗
1. Return to Muros via the mountains 🏞️. On your way you will find viewpoints where you can stop and enjoy breathtaking views of the estuary. Besides, the journey is shorter than along the coast.
2. Continue to Corcubión and Finisterre 🌅. Corcubión is a charming fishing village, similar to Muros but smaller, and Finisterre is not especially pretty. I would not stop in the town but head straight to the lighthouse 🏖️ to sit and watch the horizon and the waves crashing on the rocks. Then I would return to Muros via the mountain road, stopping at the viewpoints.
Southbound Route
Here begins our southbound route.
Bornalle 🏡
Bornalle is a small village near Muros with a lot of hórreos (traditional granaries) 🌾. Walking among its stone houses 🪨 is delightful, and it ends at a charming family beach 🏖️.
📍 View on Google MapsEsteiro 🌊
Esteiro is a town about 15 km from Muros. Its beach is family-friendly 🏖️, has showers 🚿, a bridge to jump from when the tide is high 🌉, and a pine grove with a beach bar 🍹. It is a pleasant spot, and although it lacks the charm of Muros, it has lovely areas for a walk 🚶♂️🌳.
📍 View on Google MapsO Freixo ⚓
O Freixo is a small seaside town famous for its shellfish 🦪, especially its cockles 🐚. It has a harbour and shipyards 🚤.
I would not include it in the guide if it did not have two of the best restaurants in the estuary, Pepe O Coxo y el Restaurante Rios.
📍 View on Google MapsNoia 🏰
Walking through the cobblestone streets of Noia will transport you to medieval times ⏳.
In its old town you will find the Church of San Martín ⛪, with a replica of the Pórtico de la Gloria 🎨, the Tasca Típica 🥘 (an old Galician manor house turned into a tapas restaurant) and other curiosities like the tombstone museum at the Church of Santa María A Nova.
At mesón O Forno you can enjoy a shellfish platter 🦀 for about €25.
📍 View on Google MapsPontemaceira 🛤️
About 20 minutes by car from Noia you will find Ponte Maceira, one of the most beautiful villages in Spain 🏞️. A picture-postcard Galician hamlet with a 12th-century medieval bridge 🏗️, the Pazo de Baladrón (19th c.) 🏤, the Chapel of San Blas ⛪, a mill 🛠️, and a dam in a stunning natural setting 🌿.
If it is summer, you can swim in the river 🏊♂️, but be careful, the water is freezing! 🥶
